Past NPD Projects
A few product development and industrial design examples showcasing our capabilities, processes, and past successes.
RFID Mobile Scanner
Venatrust had a proof of concept for a mobile RFID scanning inventory cart for retail stores, warehouses, etc. They needed ergonomic direction and a design that looked similar to their existing product line. Their goal was to create a high quality prototype for validation and customer feedback.
We adjusted the placement of a few internal components, placed the handles at the natural angle of the hands, accommodated the height of the 5th and 95th percentile operators, tilted the display to be perpendicular to the line of sight, opened up foot clearance at the base, built a surface model with an assembly strategy, and provided 3D printable CAD data that could be fastened to the frame.

Malibu Boats - GUI for Helm Displays
Our client wanted to create a rain capture solution for watering plants. The target market was condo or apartment dwelling botanophiles. It needed to overhang the balcony railing and hold a gallon of rainwater. Tenants are not allowed to mount anything to their railing.
We reverse benchmarked the competition and identified opportunities to set Malibu apart. We created new to the world, such as configurable controls, user profiles, and a preset configurator. We established hierarchies for functions, categorizing them into three interaction zones based on their frequency of use. We designed fluid animations, clean modern icons, removed superfluous design elements, and optimized ergonomic spacing. The goal was to show what was needed when it was needed, executed beautifully.
Malibu boats was ready to redefine the surf boat experience. Their HMI was visually dated and lacked features that boaters and surfers desired on the water. The aesthetics and usability needed an overhaul.

RainBloom
We created aesthetic theme boards to quickly identify a premium design direction. Mounting to railing is not allowed for rental units; we designed a weighted floor stand similar to patio umbrellas. It accommodates the standard railing heights across the United States while capturing up to a gallon of rainwater. The target market is botanophiles who want to water their plants without the chemicals in tap water.

Master Lock - S856 & S866 Retractable Cable Lock
We collaborated closely with mechanical engineers to ideate solutions, build prototypes, and select a solution that secures multiple devices, retracts the cable using one finger, has an obvious secured and unsecured state, four padlock capacity, and aesthetics that match the design language we created for their Safety Series Line of Products. They also nest together when stacked for efficient storage.
It won Product Of The Year!
Master Lock wanted to expand their product offering that used their existing locking IP. Set the length of the cable and lock it into position. The goal was to secure multiple lock-out devices. The device needed to store, dispense, and retract the desired amount of cable and be secured with padlocks.

Master Lock - 3685 Locker Lock
Master Lock identified an underserved market for high-end health clubs and gyms.
We identified and designed for multiple stakeholders necessary to the success of this product, e.g., architects, distributors, installers, gym goers, facility managers, and employees. We identified and designed for the user's Moment of Truth. Joining a new gym and getting comfortable in the locker room takes time. Our goal was to help gym goers by making an intuitive lock that allows users to instantly identify vacant lockers, walk them through the process of creating their security code by mimicking the pin on cell phones and tablets, and reassure them that the lock is in a secure state and their belongings are safe. We used an e-ink display for its durability and low power consumption.

Celsee Genesis
Celsee was a startup and did not have an identifiable design language. We ran a brief workshop to identify the brand values and desired attributes for its products. These attributes were translated into theme boards that identified the forms, colors, and materials that we use to design the Genesis unit. We built prototypes and validated the design.
Celsee had a proof of concept prototype and needed their design taken to the next level. It is a medical device that isolates and analyzes precancer cells. It needs to be easy to clean, easy to insert samples, remove them, and have a small footprint for the tables and shelves that these devices are placed on.

Master Lock S600
We created a new design language for Master Lock's Safety Series to enhance the perception of its performance, durability, and to be instantly recognizable. The box has stamped recessed surfaces creating rigidity, protecting graphics, and giving it a stronger appearance than the competition. The box is designed with oversized components to reinforce the perception of durability and trustworthiness. It daisy-chains to each other for large jobs, shows the key that unlocks all the safety devices reassuring the crew that they are safe to work, and can be labeled easily for the procedure.
Master Lock identified an underserved market for high-performance LOTO lock boxes, such as oil rigs out in the salty ocean. These boxes needed to be manufactured from stainless steel and offer an elevated experience compared to the current commodity LOTO offering.
